Computers running overnight costs companies $2.8B a year

saving power with your computer Computers running overnight costs companies $2.8B a yearMost of us don’t think about it leaving our computers running all night, I know I don’t. It saves me a few minutes in the morning not having to boot-up my PC and gets me running with all my applications intact ASAP. We all know it doesn’t take a rocket scientist to figure out that all the computers running in the world during the night is a hugh waste of energy.

There’s one popular study that’s says in the US alone there’s $2.8 billion dollars wasted on excess energy costs each year. The study says 20 million tons of carbon dioxide is produced from these computers being left running overnight, comparable that’s about the amount produced by 4 million vehicles.

With the down turn of the economy and the trillion-dollar bailouts this data is almost useless to those on capital hill or big incorporation’s. But here are some figures for those that run small business that might get their attention: if you operate a business with 1,000 computer’s running through the night, you can save about $28,000 a year if you just secure the power.  Just by turning those computers off at night can save a company with 10,000 computers over $260,000 a year and 1,871 tons of carbon dioxide emissions, the report says. That’s a saving worthy of notice if you ask me, not to mention keeping the planet a bit greener.

Besides if you shut those computers down at night their going to function better by being able to perform longer during the day without rebooting thus saving time and money. I do believe that’s what owning a business is all about, right!
