Dell XPS One 24 (PRODUCT) RED Desktop Review
For those who have been lured into the excitement of an all-in-one PC, you’re probably well aware that all of Sony’s desktop systems are in this format and Dell, HP and Gateway have recently moved into this direction.
Dell’s new XPS One is another system in the ever growing line of all-in-one PC’s. With a price of $2200, its not exactly the cheapest system out there but it packs a powerful system that knocks most of the competition out of the park.
DESIGN
The specs of the XPS One 24 are pretty impressive. Running the show is a 2.33GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Q8200 processor, 4GB of DDR2 SDRAM, 512 NVIDIA GeForce 9600 GT graphics card, 750GB HDD (7200rpm), Blu-ray burner and Gigabit Ethernet 802.11n wireless. In terms of OS you get Vista Ultimate (PRODUCT) RED with SP 1. There are a variety of ports included such as an 8-in-1 media card reader, 6 USB 2.0 ports, two FireWire 400 imports, TV tuner input, Ethernet, analog and digital audio jacks as well as PC card expansion slots.
As for the screen, you are getting 24 inches of LCD real estate which makes this a fully qualified entertainment device that can handle HD video content. The only major drawback to the design is the lack of an HDMI input port which would have made it perfect for connecting game consoles and DV cameras. There is a TV tuner included so you will have no problem watching the latest episode of Hero’s or next Super Bowl season this fall.
PERFORMANCE
We had mixed feelings about the performance of the Dell XPS One 24. While the Intel Core 2 Quad is more than capable of multi tasking it performs a little slower during single processing such as Photoshop thanks to its slower clock speed. That is not to say that the processor is crap as it aced most of the tests. But on the other hand it did not perform as well as the VAIO LV180J during the single task tests.
Other than that we were very impressed with the performance marks that this system was able to rack up. Thanks to the processor, graphics card and included RAM this system is more than ample to play Crysis on the mid level graphics range and makes a desirable HD movie viewing experience thanks to the Blu-ray drive. But we would have been a happier had they decided to allow the stand to be removed so the system could be mounted on a wall.
CONCLUSION
Sprinting in at $2,200, this is not the cheapest of systems. But it packs one hell of a punch thanks to the 64-bit Window’s Vista Ultimate OS and Quad Core processor.
If you’re planning on doing multi tasking than this is the perfect system, on the other hand if you’re more into single tasking than you might want to look for an all-in-one system with a higher clock speed. The Sony VAIO LV180J comes to mind.
