Fusion-io ioDrive, Fastest Drives on the Planet

iodrive Fusion io ioDrive, Fastest Drives on the Planet

Fusion-io- based in Salt Lake City, Utah, a leading provider of enterprise solid state technology and high performance I/O solutions recently announced that it’s newest product line is now ready for market, the ioDrive. Basically the ioDrive is NAND memory chips with it’s own controller integrated on a single PCI card. The ioDrive is much faster than the best SATA II Solid State Drives at an impressive 800MB/s read and 680MB/s write performance speeds with 102,000 IOPS sustained. Last I checked that makes it the fastest drive by far on the planet.

Currently Fusion-IO offers two drives for sale, the 80GB and a 160GB  with the 320GB soon to be released. These high end drives do come at a cost, 80GB version sells for $2995 US Dollars, the 160GB version sells for $7200 US Dollars (at the time of this posting of course) from DVNation, currently the sole distributor and they do offer discounts on volume sales.

Surely these drives are currently aimed at the server industry. There is a positive note to the high prices and that’s their life span, if the 80GB ioDrive operates everyday at 1 Terabyte of write/erase operations it will last for 51 years while the160GB ioDrive will live for 101 years. I don’t care what book your reading, that’s impressive and without a doubt much longer than any traditional mechanical hard drive. You can use two cards in a RAID configuration to achieve better enhanced performance. Current drivers are for the 64 bit Windows and Linux
