Northrop Grumman wins contract to build US Army’s new hybrid airship

To assist U.S. troops in Afghanistan, the United States Army has awarded Northrup Grumman a lucrative contract to build the LEMV surveillance ship. This long-endurance surveillance airship is over a football field in length. It will be able to carry 2,500-pounds while hovering 20,000-feet at a 34 mph. LEMV will be able to maintain altitudes of 20,000 feet for a three-week period. Three ships will be constructed, and the Army will shell out 517 million dollars for the project. The first ship is expected to be in the Army’s inventory by end of 2011. Check out the video below to see this air ship in action.
