SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Being Certified and Coming Soon
We’ve been hearing about USB 3.0 for years, finally it’s going to happen. This third generation Universal Serial Bus interconnect will transfer data at speeds up to 4.8Gbit/s, that’s ten times faster than the current speed of the USB 2.0’s 480MBit/s. I’d say that is lighting fast in comparison to USB 2.0. backwards-compatible with USB 2.0, which is also backwards-compatible with the first USB 1.1.
How much faster is the new USB 3.0 ? If your transferring a 25GB HD movie from point A to point B with the original USB standard which was USB1.0, it will take 9.3 hours. Moving the same amount of data with today’s USB 2.0, it takes about 14 minutes. With the super fast USB 3.0 it will take about 70 seconds. Thats a big improvement don’t you think?.
Looks like this is just the beginning with higher speed transfers via USB, Intel stated that the USB 3.0 specification would be optimized for low power and improved protocol efficiency. Intel also stated that USB 3.0 ports and cabling will be fabricated with both copper and optical cable, meaning even higher speeds will be obtained in the very near future.
Jeff Ravencraft, Intel’s technology strategist, said: “The digital era requires high-speed performance and reliable connectivity to move the enormous amounts of digital content now present in everyday life. USB 3.0 will meet this challenge while maintaining (USB 2.0’s) ease-of-use experience.”
