Easily Install Ubuntu on a Windows Netbook, No CD Needed

Here’s a nice and easy way to install Linux on your netbook just like you would any other application, no partitioning, no formating your hard drive, just install, and take Ubuntu’s Netbook Remix for a test drive. With Ubuntu’s Netbook Remix you can install and remove Ubuntu from Windows, just like any other software application.

Over at How-To Geek’s, Matthew details the simple process of installing Ubuntu. No need to burn a CD. Just launch the installer, select “Ubuntu Netbook” enter a password for the new account, and click “Install”, go grab some java and when you return, Ubuntu will be ready to rock. We have discussed several methods previously about installing Linux (10 easy ways to try Linux without leaving Windows).

Matthew is kind enough to spell out how to make your Windows files and folders easily reachable from the Ubuntu desktop, he also breaks down a more advanced Windows/Ubuntu boot option. Finally, he gives a helpful and basic tour of Ubuntu. This is no doubt an easy way to check out Ubuntu on a netbook.

Ubuntu 10.04 will now Include Beginner’s Manual

Seeking help with the free Linux distribution Ubuntu 10.04? You do know about the Ubuntu forums right? You may also want to check out the Ubuntu Wikis, it’s better organized than the forums but sometimes ist’ a bit outdated in certain areas. Luckly the Ubuntu team and a bunch of contributors have created a well organized manual for Ubuntu 10.04, they were also nice enough to add the next release (Lucid Lynx) in by default. “Lucid Lynx” is the code name for Ubuntu 10.04, scheduled for release in April 2010. The manual is basically focused on the beginner with how-tos and related topics that you need to know after installing the famed Linux distro. What topics would you like to see in the manual? Knowing our 30 Recommended Software Downloads for Free article was now a year old, we decided to give it an upgrade. After we got started I didn’t fully realize just how many applications we had tested throughout the year, and how many had made the cut until I started putting this list together.

When we finished compiling all the notes the list was hugh, after pondering for a week what to cut I decided there was simply to many to cut it back down to 30 software programs. Therefore the upgrade got tossed, and a new article listing what we feel are the best software applications that deserve to be on your machine is here.

We’ve picked out the best free software programs that we could think of, so there’s no need to spend dollars to get quality applications and utility software. Whether you’re looking for free anti-virus software, or free Office software, you’ll find it here. 1. 7-Zip performs all the archiving and extracting power you need, an excellent compression tool.
2. AbiWord a word processor thats compatible with Microsoft Word documents and OpenDocument Format.
